Almost daily, tour guides in downtown Boston stand before the Old Corner Bookstore and jokingly proclaim "This is the oldest Chipotle in America!" And while we at HBI love a good joke, the tourism industry is missing some far better stories.

Today, the Old Corner Bookstore sits, as its name implies, on the corner of Washington and School Streets, five minutes from Downtown Crossing and perhaps another 10 from the Common. It is a squat building, many windowed, and on its left side hangs a brief green sign. Timothy Crease built this structure as his apothecary and residence shortly.

Thomas Creese erected the gambrel-roofed building long known as the Old Corner Bookstore for his residence and apothecary shop. Next door on Washington Street, Andrew Cunningham Jr., a glazier, constructed his house and shop in about 1728.
